The Department of Biological Sciences was established in the academic year 1995/1996 . It has grown to be one of the largest scientific departments in the University, with an established academic staff  of 12 faculty members, 3 teaching assistances, 6 technicians and a secretary. The total number of students enrolled in the department during 1998-1999 was 104 students,(87 female and 17 male). It undertakes a wide range of teaching duties and research interests.

 The research and teaching activities of the Department are carried out in the following laboratories:

• Two large General Biology Teaching Laboratories.

• Botany Laboratory.

• Zoology Laboratory.

• Microbiology Laboratory.

• Biochemistry and Physiology Laboratory.

• Histology and Microtechnique Laboratory.

• Genetics Laboratory.

  In additions to the above teaching laboratories, the Department also has the following research laboratories:

• Zoology and Ecology Laboratory.

• Genetics Laboratory.

• Animal Physiology Laboratory.

• Plant Laboratory.

• Biochemistry Laboratory.

• Biotechnology and Molecular Biology.

• Microbiology Laboratory.

• Mycology Laboratory.

• Immunology Laboratory.

  In addition to the normal equipment in each laboratory, all teaching and research laboratories are equipped with various equipment to facilitate research and teaching.

  The Department of Biological Sciences also houses the following units:
